Tree House Holiday in the Harz: 14 Houses Among the Treetops

Sleep where the forest begins. 14 tree houses stand on the grounds of Sonnenresort Ettershaus — on stilts, deep in the woods, surrounded by trees that have grown for generations. A way of staying overnight that you won't find anywhere else in the Harz.

What makes a tree house stay special

Waking up feels different here. Instead of traffic noise, you hear birds. Instead of a hotel corridor, you see treetops. Instead of grey concrete, you smell the forest — damp after rain, resinous in summer.

Each of our tree houses has its own terrace with a view into the trees. You can step out with your coffee and breathe deeply before the day begins. Inside, you'll find everything you need for a night or a week: double bed, private bathroom, Wi-Fi. Compact, but thoughtfully designed.

The three tree house categories

Tree House Elvis — the original

25 m² for up to 3 people. Our largest tree house. Private terrace, comfortable double bed and an extra sleeping option for a third person. Perfect for couples, small families or friends taking time out. The classic that gave our tree house collection its name.

Tree House Elvis Junior — compact and cosy

20 m² for 2 people. A little smaller, just as unique. Private terrace, everything you need for two. Ideal as a retreat for couples who simply want peace and quiet — no unnecessary space, but maximum nature right behind the glass front.

Octagon — the eight-sided one

Our newest tree house with distinctive architecture: eight walls, an unusual geometry and an interior that feels like a small, round home. For guests looking for an overnight stay that's truly different.

What comes with the tree house

Even though you sleep in a tree house — you have full use of the entire resort:

  • 31°C heated indoor and outdoor pool with integrated whirlpool, 16 metres long
  • Sauna world with soft sauna, Finnish sauna (min. 80°C) and steam bath
  • Breakfast buffet in the main building from 7:00 a.m. — with pancake machine
  • Restaurant Taut's and Bar Hoffmann for dinner and drinks
  • Restaurant Ursprung right by the tree houses — more rustic, closer to nature
  • Bathrobes for the walk to the pool in the main building
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout the resort

Who stays here?

Our tree house guests are a varied mix. Couples come for a romantic weekend — especially in the off-season, when the forest is quiet and lights glow between the trunks in the evening. Small families with one or two children love the adventure element — sleeping in the forest always has something of both Heidi and Robinson Crusoe about it for children. Friends often book the houses two at a time, side by side, for a getaway together.

When to visit a tree house?

Every season has its charm:

  • Spring — the forest wakes up, leaves turn green, the air is still fresh
  • Summer — sun through the canopy, picnics on the terrace, campfire atmosphere in the evening
  • Autumn — foliage in red and gold, the most beautiful time for photos
  • Winter — snow on the branches, the pool as a contrast to the cold, stars without city lights

Tip: Spring and autumn weeks are our personal recommendations. Nature is at its most intense, the atmosphere is calm, and the Harz weather usually plays along.

What you should know

  • The tree houses stand on stilts above the forest floor, with a small staircase leading up
  • They are compact — space is optimised, not generous. Anyone who needs lots of storage should rather book a room in the villa
  • Dogs are welcome at the resort; in the tree house on request
  • Children up to 6 years stay free
  • Bathrobes and towels are provided

Excursions from the tree house

If you already live in the forest, you should explore it too. The hiking trails from Bad Harzburg start right outside your door — to the Rabenklippe, the Burgberg, into the Eckertal. If you have families with children on board, you'll find the Baumwipfelpfad Harz (1 km at 26 metres high) further down in the valley, as well as the Wildgehege Bad Harzburg wildlife park with free admission.
